The Mayor Who is Keeping the Good Things Going in Portland and Building an Even Better Future
Like many people, I got my start in public service volunteering a day a week in my children’s classrooms. What started as helping teachers make photocopies and reading to students turned into six years on the School Committee, 14 years on the City Council and four terms as Mayor.
In 1978 I joined Casco Bay Lines as a deckhand. I worked my way up to captain, a position I held for seventeen years. During that time I was an active member of Local 333, United Marine Division of the International Longshoreman’s Association for almost two decades, serving as both a union negotiator and Shop Steward. Today I work at CBL as Operations Manager, making sure that our ferry service continues to be the best in Maine and managing a staff of 33 full time and 30 seasonal employees.
I have always tried to be approachable, straight forward, and someone who brings people together to solve tough challenges. My service to Portland goes beyond elected office. I have been President of Maine Municipal Association, co-chair of the East End School Building Committee and the Middle School Building Committee, vice-chair of the Maine Service Center Coalition, and served on the Board of Directors at ecomaine, the Waterfront Alliance, the Institute of Civic Leadership, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Portland Public Library.
My wife, Kelly Hasson, and I live on Chenery Street. I am an avid runner and wake up at 5:00 AM, three days a week, to workout at the Maine Boot Camp.
